But when an urgently needed, brand-new tool suddenly failed, the metrologists moved out on a special mission: Delivering overnight service, they digitalized the mold tools using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gom.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">GOM<\/span><\/a> scanning systems so that precise, rapid reworking was possible. The impending default on delivery was averted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"c56182\" class=\"csc-text-wrap\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"csc-default csc-text\">\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Lometec\u2019s customer produces, among other things, thermoplastic weather-proof housings designed for use in extreme climates. When the quantities in demand began exceeding the existing tool\u2019s capacities, the company commissioned construction of a second, identical tool\u2014and that\u2019s where the trouble began.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"c56183\" class=\"csc-textpic-wrap\">\n<h3 class=\"csc-header csc-header-n5\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tool failure after passing first sampling<\/h3>\n<div class=\"csc-textpic-text\">\n<p class=\"bodytext\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">At first, everything was looking hunky-dory: The new tool was delivered and worked just fine, as verified by Lometec as part of first sampling of the housing. The 3D measurement service sampled 125 parts and recorded the results in the initial sample test report (ISTR). Process capability was validated and the plastics processor was able to produce with two tools at once, doubling output as desired.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">But shortly after starting mass production with the second tool, it proved prone to faults: Sliders and inserts began seizing. (Image source: Lometec)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div id=\"c56185\" class=\"csc-textpic-wrap\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"csc-header csc-header-n1\">\n<h3 class=\"csc-firstHeader\">The solution: Scan and rework\u2014asap<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"csc-textpic-text\">\n<p class=\"bodytext\">This gave the plastics processor the idea to have Lometec digitalize and measure the 14 affected mold inserts and sliders. The measuring data would then be used to rework the imprecise spare parts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Lometec\u2019s managing director J\u00f6rg Werkmeister remembers: \u201cOur job was to compare the old inserts with the new ones and return all of the inserts to the company again as quickly as possible, so they\u2019d be able to keep on producing with one tool at least. Having both tools measured was naturally stopping production completely.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"c56186\" class=\"csc-textpic-wrap\">\n<div class=\"csc-textpic-text\">\n<p class=\"bodytext\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">No sooner said than done: Themselves specialists for rapid <a href=\"https:\/\/aie.com.vn\/en\/3d-scanning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">optical 3D measurement<\/span><\/a>, Lometec was confident they had what it took. The measurement service maintains two fully climatized measuring rooms and uses measuring equipment by renowned German manufacturers, including three GOM systems for full-field digitalization of technical mold halves. \u201cWe set up the 3D scanning lab completely from scratch in 2016, it\u2019s absolutely state-of-the-art,\u201d J\u00f6rg Werkmeister says. \u201cOur trio of <a href=\"https:\/\/aie.com.vn\/en\/atos-triple-scan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">ATOS Triple Scan<\/span><\/a>, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/aie.com.vn\/en\/atos-core\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ATOS Core<\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/aie.com.vn\/en\/atos-core\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ATOS ScanPort<\/a><\/span> means we\u2019re excellently equipped for a diverse range of digitalization jobs.\u201d Investing in GOM technology had been very good decision, Werkmeister goes on to say. \u201cThe measuring data the systems supply are outstanding.\u201d To meet the demand for promptness, two metrologists tackled the plastics processor\u2019s job in tandem: One working with ATOS Triple Scan, the other with ATOS Core.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Before conducting the measurements, the metrologists cleaned the sliders and inserts, removing residues such as grease and the like. Next, they applied high-precision reference point markers. These ensure that the software joins the separate scanned images correctly. \u201cFor digitalization, we chose really small increments,\u201d J\u00f6rg Werkmeister tells us. This achieved high detail resolution.<\/p>\n<div class=\"csc-header csc-header-n1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2 class=\"h1 csc-firstHeader \">Triple Scan Principle<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"two_columns_row row\">\n<div class=\"two_columns first col-xs-push-6 col-xs-6\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"csc-textpic csc-textpic-center csc-textpic-above\">\n<div class=\"csc-textpic-imagewrap\" data-csc-images=\"1\" data-csc-cols=\"2\">\n<div class=\"csc-textpic-center-outer\">\n<div class=\"csc-textpic-center-inner\">\n<figure class=\"csc-textpic-image csc-textpic-last\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/aie.com.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/3d-scanning-systems-prevents-production-downtimes-5545.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"354\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"two_columns last col-xs-pull-6 col-xs-6\">\n<div id=\"c56188\" class=\"csc-textpic-wrap\">\n<div class=\"csc-textpic-text\">\n<p class=\"bodytext\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Both of the GOM 3D scanners used work with the Triple Scan Principle: Fringe patterns are projected onto the surface of the object and are captured by two cameras based on the stereo camera principle. As the beam paths of both cameras and the projector are calibrated in advance, 3D surface points from three different ray intersections can be calculated. The result is complete measuring data without holes or erratic points. The systems are mobile and can be employed easily even outside of the measuring room, e.g., on site in the customer\u2019s production facilities.<\/p>\n<div class=\"csc-header csc-header-n1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2 class=\"h1 csc-firstHeader \">The measurement detects differences<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"c56190\" class=\"csc-text-wrap\">\n<div class=\"csc-default csc-text\">\n<p class=\"bodytext\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">What did the measurements say? J\u00f6rg Werkmeister summarizes: \u201cThe GOM software used the measuring data from first tool\u2019s sliders and inserts to generate a 3D point cloud. We uploaded this to GOM Inspect Professional as a reference. We then took the second tool\u2019s 3D slider and insert data and compared the two sets actual-to-actual.
